Thermal Transfer Labels

Thermal Transfer Labels are designed specifically for Thermal Transfer Printers. They are not Direct Thermal Labels (which are discussed on the page titled Direct Thermal Labels. Thermal Transfer Labels are different. You need Thermal Transfer Ribbon along with a Thermal Transfer Printer in order to print a high quality Thermal Transfer Label. Thermal Transfer labels are used for many applications. Some popular applications for thermal transfer labels are barcoded labels used in manufacturing, distribution, and retail. They're also used in the healthcare, banking, gaming and airline industry. (You've seen a thermal transfer label for your airline tickets, it's just printed on card stock rather than one a label that has adhesive.)

Thermal transfer labels are produced either on rolls or fanfolded. Depending on your thermal printer (and your preference), both work equally well. Fanfolded thermal transfer labels are sometimes easier to deal with because you don't have to change rolls, but thermal transfer labels on rolls are handy because they're they don't get hung up as easily during printing. If you've got a good set up, both can work equally well.

Thermal transfer labels do not come in contact with the hot printhead of a thermal as is the case with Direct thermal labels. There is a thermal ribbon between the label and the printhead. The printhead actually heats and melts the "ink" from the back side of the thermal ribbon onto the printface of the thermal transfer label. This is what creates a sharp clean print image on the label. Heating elements in the print head turn on and off depending on where the image is to create the text, images or barcode that is designed. Printing this way is superior to Direct Thermal printing in many ways, but is slightly more expensive in upfront costs. With Thermal Transfer Labels, you need 1" of Thermal ribbon for every 1" of Thermal Transfer label. So you consume an extra material. The price of the ribbon is a fraction of the cost of the thermal label, but it's still an extra cost of Direct Thermal labels. However, because the printhead does not come in contact with the labels, there is a savings with direct thermal labels. The printhead itself has less wear and tear, so you won't have to replace the printhead as frequently. It's been estimated that the cost of the thermal ribbon is equivalent to the cost of a new printhead more frequently. You'll need to determine that yourself, because there are several variables to that including surface coverage of "print" on the label, width of label vs width of ribbon, etc. Thermal transfer printing can be done on many different types of substrates, from paperstock materials, or paper labels to Polyester and Kimdura materials. Thermal transfer labels are ideals where quality, scanability, and long shelf-life are important. Contact us if you would like determining which product is best for your application.
